Public Meetings: Philadelphia County

Philadelphia Public Meeting
August 10, 1999

Representatives of a number of different organizations that are active along the Schuylkill River in the City of Philadelphia attended the meeting. Each organization provided an overview of their projects and/or objectives.

East Falls Tree Tenders

Urban forest restoration
Environmental stewardship
Open space
Particular concerns
Impervious surfaces

Schuylkill River Development Corporation

Promote River Park from the Art Museum to Spruce Street
Reconnect people to the river
Development of greenway, brownfield redevelopment and sustainable development for the tidal portion.

Philadelphia Water Department

Source water protection—regulations will be based on source water quality.
Schuylkill River will be monitored at five sites
PWD will coordinate with other water suppliers
Need public education regarding pollution prevention and stormwater runoff
Need to coordinate the SDWA and CWA

Wissahickon Restoration Volunteers

Reforestation
Trail repair
Deer population control
Hydrology—DO monitoring

Fairmount Park Commission

East and West Park restoration plan—targeted for May, 2000
Trail master plan
Land acquisition in the Wissahickon
Environmental Education (Strawberry Mansion)

Friends of the Wissahickon

Protection of wilderness park
Easement program—30 acres have been added to park and is managed by FOW
Control of invasive species—have 13K grant for park and surrounding private land
Canopy gap survey

Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education

Environmental Education—expanding focus to include adults
Need for common access to information—more focus on regional impacts, need to bring together municipal governments and educate institutional landowners.
Need to stress economic value of conservation issues to city leaders.

Manayunk Development Corporation

Recreational master plan
Streetscape plan
Canal restoration
Need to balance preservation of open space with continuing development
Encourage private preservation through public land examples
Environmental education that reconnects people to water resources.

General comments/questions with respect to the RCP

Need to explore the use of zoning overlays
Need to examine land use regulation—existing and enforcement
How does a study this size translate into implementation
Need to create a liaison with administration and the council districts
